Google Gemini Agent: Universal Enterprise Coworker With Its Own Email, Calendar and Drive. What Launched at Gemini at Work 2026
On October 8, 2026 at Gemini at Work, Google Cloud launched the Gemini agent: a universal enterprise agent that plans work, uses tools, connects to business systems and can run as a persistent coworker with its own Workspace identity. Here is what shipped, who it is for and how it compares.

What Google shipped
On October 8, 2026, at Gemini at Work 2026, Google Cloud introduced the Gemini agent: a universal agent for work. Google describes it as a single prompt box that already has an organization's business context and can handle knowledge work, questions, content creation and coding.
- Plans the work: Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the agent takes objectives, not just instructions.
- Uses skills and tools: it loads skills, calls tools and connects to Cloud customers' business systems.
- Returns finished work: inside documents, inboxes and developer environments people already use.
- Picks a model: it chooses the best model for the job, with built-in cost controls plus enterprise security and governance.

Where it runs
According to TechCrunch and VentureBeat, the agent is reachable from:
- Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Calendar and more)
- Microsoft 365, Slack, ServiceNow
- iOS and Android, Windows and Mac desktops
- The command line interface and the web
It can also connect to systems such as Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, Snowflake and Salesforce, and work with Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers inside or outside the company network. Users can attach files, folders or project bundles that combine files and skills.
A coworker with its own identity
Google's bigger product bet is persistence. The agent can act as a personal assistant or as a persistent digital coworker with a dedicated Workspace identity: its own email (for example at @agents.company.com), calendar, Drive storage and directory presence.
- Employees can tag it in Chat, email it, share with it or add it to a group.
- Long-running tasks can last hours or days; you can start on one device and resume on another because execution is in the cloud.
- Actions write an audit trail attributed to the agent, not to a human user.
- A tasks inbox shows thinking, subagent delegation, skills loading, code and progress.
The Verge notes Google is starting with businesses before a later consumer rollout, so it can solve harder problems around security, scale and performance first.
Model choice and cost controls
By default the agent picks the best model for the task. Users can also choose a model, including Anthropic's Claude today, with open-source and other private models planned. Enterprise admins can restrict which models are allowed; smart routing then selects among the permitted set.
Google is also pitching operational economics:
- Smart routing for performance vs. cost
- Real-time / project spend caps that can pause agent activity when budgets are exhausted
- Department cost attribution
Google told VentureBeat the agent will be included at no additional charge where Gemini Enterprise is available, including through existing Workspace business and enterprise subscriptions, and will not need a separate app or setup once broadly released. It is in private preview for selected customers now, with wider availability promised but no date.
Security claims
- Each agent gets a cryptographically attested identity under existing org policies.
- Complex tasks run in isolated containers with restricted outbound traffic; an Agent Gateway applies company rules.
- Agents can access only files explicitly shared with them through Workspace permissions.
- Controls are said to stop workflows that try to send sensitive data to unauthorized models.
Open questions remain for buyers: whether every agent gets a full Workspace license, how coworker accounts are provisioned, data handling when third-party models process prompts, and the total cost of running many persistent coworkers.
Who is already in
Early testers named in coverage include sportswear brand On, Shopify and PayPal. Sundar Pichai said Gemini has over 1 billion monthly active users and that nearly 90% of Fortune 100 businesses use Gemini Enterprise. Specialized industry packs (finance, legal, data engineering, analytics) were also highlighted.
How it stacks up
The launch lands in a crowded week for workplace agents: Microsoft's updated Copilot (Home / Cowork / Autopilot), OpenAI's Dots always-on agents, Anthropic's Claude for Google Workspace integration and others. Google's differentiator is a single enterprise agent surface that keeps company context while optionally routing work to Gemini or Claude under admin control.

How BSH can help
At BSH Technologies we help teams evaluate enterprise agents with clear security, cost and routing rules: which model for which job, how to connect tools without leaking data, and how to measure whether an agent finishes real work. If you want a Thrissur engineering partner to pilot Gemini agent style workflows safely, we can help you design the governance and evaluation layer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Google Gemini agent?
A universal enterprise AI agent announced by Google Cloud on October 8, 2026. It plans work from a single prompt, uses skills and tools, connects to business systems and can return finished work inside apps people already use.
Does the Gemini agent get its own email?
Persistent coworker configurations can receive a Workspace identity with email, calendar, Drive and directory presence, so employees can tag or email the agent like a colleague. Google has not confirmed that every personal-assistant configuration gets a full Workspace account.
Is the Gemini agent generally available?
No. It is in private preview for selected enterprise customers. Google says wider availability is planned and that the agent will be included at no extra charge for Gemini Enterprise customers once broadly released, but it has not set a date.
